From the standard output, Netstat does not display your computer s connections and listening ports This information might be necessary to understand whom the computer is communicating with and whether a port is open and ready to receive data There are a number of Trojans that hackers plant on systems that open ports so that the hacker can connect to the open port later and send malicious data to that port A good example is the old Netbus program When a user ran Netbus, it would do nothing but open port 12345 so that the hacker could connect and do things like eject your CD-ROM, run a program on your system, navigate your system to a URL, and switch your left and right mouse buttons It is important that you be able to identify whether a system has been hit with such a program, and the best way is to monitor the listening ports with Netstat To view a list of listening ports, type the following command:

Traffic from either the Internet or the internal network will have access to the DMZ The inbound access list on the Serial0, however, will prevent external hosts from initiating connections to the internal network Similarly, the inbound access list on the Ethernet0 interface will prevent DMZ hosts from initiating connections to the internal network or to the Internet The only applications that can be initiated from the DMZ will be SMTP and DNS No initiated connections of any kind will be enabled from the DMZ to the internal network This feature will ensure that if the DMZ host is compromised, the DMZ host cannot be used to further compromise internal hosts Additionally, only limited connections will be permitted to initiate from the DMZ to external networks If our DMZ host is compromised, the host cannot be used to attack either our site or other Internet sites Preventing your hosts from being used to compromise other networks on the Internet is called being a "good Internet citizen" and is strongly encouraged In the near future, companies that do not take "reasonable measures" to prevent their hosts from being used to compromise other companies' networks will most likely be legally liable for damages Attempting to prevent your hosts from being used by attackers to compromise other networks, therefore, is in your best interests Note that if an internal host were to access the DMZ host, and the DMZ host had been compromised, an attacker could tamper with the connection Depending on the application used, however, the attacker might be able to cause substantial problems on the internal host An attacker would not be able to initiate a sustained attack from the DMZ, however, due to the inbound access list on Ethernet0 No method exists to prevent this type of vulnerability Your internal hosts take the same risk when they access any device on an external network A DMZ, by definition, enables access by unknown outside parties and should therefore be treated with the same caution as any other external network Closely examine the relevant portions of the configuration in Figure 8 4 The use of CBAC on two interfaces makes this example as complex as you are likely to find in a real-world network This example could have been configured differently so that CBAC was applied on only one interface We could have simply used a traditional, extended access list on the inbound DMZ interface CBAC gives greater protection, however, in the event that a host on the DMZ becomes compromised Despite your best efforts, it is possible that the DMZ host might be compromised so it is prudent to plan for the worst-case scenario Notice that the inspection could have been configured on the outbound side on the interface of SERIAL0 d tb d i t f E0 If thi d th i ti l h.

Another option available enables you to display the Ethernet interface statistics of your system The information available with the -e option includes the number of bytes received and sent, the number of discards and errors, and unknown protocols By understanding what this information means, you can monitor the amount of traffic that is being used in communications Since this option also displays errors, you can check here to see if communication-related problems are occurring Figure 6-13 shows an example of the Netstat utility with this option

Although the previous option shows Ethernet interface-specific information, protocol-specific information is also available With the -s option, you can display statistics for all the communications protocols used by TCP/IP The protocols
